The Epinions Village Write-Off
Nov 02 '00
Have you ever noticed that as you participate at Epinions, gaining knowledge, understanding, new friends, and even a little money, that you tend to pick up a lot. Whether it is a better understanding of a product, a better way of writing, or finding interesting people around the globe that have interests similar to you, every day (usually) you learn something new.
It takes a village to raise a child
Consider your first day here at Epinions. You may have been referred here by a friend or clicked on a banner that advertised money for your opinion. Or it is possible that you were doing web searches for that new product you were thinking about buying and just happened to come across an Epinions review for it.
Taking a look around at others reviews, of course having your own opinion on the subject may have inspired you to join in. What ever your reason, you think you might just give it a shot and see what happens. After all, you were sure to make more money with just one review than most of the pay-to-surf programs! :-)
So now a new child is born into the big world of Epinions.com. Now, it is up to the rest of us to raise this child into a valuable addition to our community.
If our new child ventures out on its own, writes their first review, and we all shake our fingers saying "Bad! Bad review!" then that child will cease to flourish. Instead they will either shrivel up and die or become a menace to society. There is also the small possibility that this child is strong enough to make it on their own and seek out lessons on how to become better, but that it tough on them.
First Reviews
Instead, we should be encouraging them to learn more. When we read that first review and it is short and doesn't have a lot of information, take a few seconds to check out their profile. Was this one of their first reviews? If so, make sure to leave them a comment. If they produced a top notch review, let them know and welcome them to our little family. If it needs some help, recommend some changes so they can learn and do better in the future.
Introduce them to the neighbors
How many people are members of other clubs that help out Epinions members? Why not invite these children of ours to join us, let them know that there are message boards like Delphi and eGroups where members of Epinions go to talk about problems with Epinions, read/rate each others reviews, and learn how to neat things like make bold and italics in their reviews. Not only will they learn more, you just might learn something from them.
Growing up
As they grow up, they will learn to do things on their own quickly. They will start telling others about their community and will start seeking ways to improve. Learning about the Partner sites and referrals from you or others that are willing to help, just might keep us from having a that bright yellow and red backgrounds that hurt our eyes so much. :-)
They will also start to get paid. Of course, they will already have been earning from their early Epinions, but that first real check being delivered in the mail is just like when you were a teenager getting your first paycheck from your first job. It's just plain COOL!
Members of this Village that help them grow
Mom or Dad - This would be the person who referred them. Unfortunately, not everyone has a mom or dad. Sometimes we need to step in and act as a surrogate. If you have the opportunity to adopt someone, do it!
The Neighbors - As our child finds an area they like to play in, they will start to notice the other players there. These are the people that like to specialize. Sometimes they find that one friend that they always see out there.
The Shopkeepers - You always see advertising banners, the shopkeepers put them there. After all, if weren't for them, this community wouldn't be too prosperous. They may not write reviews, but they certainly provide us with what to write about.
The Consumers - These are our customers. They come here to check out our real opinions of the products they want to purchase. It is important that we keep them happy with helpful information to ensure they keep coming back.
The Authorities - Well, we all know who they are. They are the police, firefighters, and medics that are setting forth the rules and trying to fix the problems that arise.
The Mentors - Self-appointed people that like to volunteer their time to help others in need. There are a lot out there that I truly respect and am grateful that I found. If it weren't for them, I may not have stuck it out.
The Elders - These would be the Advisors at Epinions. People who have been around, can tell great stories of the way it was, remember why rules have been made, and really know their stuff in the areas they specialize in. Most are good, helping anyone they can. But as always, sometimes there is a power trip for a while.
It takes a Village to raise a child
Each and every member of this great village of ours has the opportunity to help the newest members of our community. To point them in the right direction, advise them on how they can improve, congratulate them when they do great, and help them when times are tough.
Which role do you want to play? Are you ready to go out and raise a child. Are you ready to be a mentor and practice what you preach?
CHALLENGE
I challenge each and every one of you who reads this to go to the Just In section and search out a "child". There are usually quite a few to choose from. Give them input, welcome them, and track their progress. Not only will it help them, but you'll really enjoy the feeling it gives you as you watch their skills improve and see how they flourish under your attention.
